Over the past weekend, Michelle Obama, wife of Sen. Barack Obama, made an interesting statement.
What we've learned over this year is that hope is making a comeback. It is making a comeback and let me tell you something, for the first time in my adult lifetime, I'm really proud of my country.
Now, we could certainly understand it if she said that she was never prouder of her country. But for the first time in her life, she is proud?
While we know a fair amount about Barack Obama's past, Michelle's is much more private. So we don't know her exact age. But it's probably safe to say that she's been an adult for, oh, a quarter-century or so.
Are we to understand that Reagan's great speeches left her cold? "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" And a few years later, down it came - and Michelle Obama sits alone, unmoved.
The amazing invention of the Internet? Nothing to see here, move along...
The heroism shown on 9-11? Naah, no big deal.
Perhaps Mrs. Obama is not interested in the great affairs of the world at large. That's fine; there are many people like that, who prefer to occupy themselves with successes and failures closer to home. But that raises an even more interesting question.
Was Mrs. Obama not proud when her husband was elected to the Illinois state legislature? How about when he crushed his opponent in his election to the U.S. Senate? Or perhaps when he delivered an amazing speech to the Democratic National Convention? Were none of these things a source of pride - of an "only in America" moment?
No, for Mrs. Obama, it would appear, nothing short of her husband in the Oval Office will satisfy her sense of pride. Anything less is, well, bleecch.
One can't help but think of her reflections on her "snore-y and stinky" husband. While thousands of young girls swoon over the dashing and debonair Barack, and even aged senators admire him for being so "articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy," Michelle Obama sits in the background with a wooden spoon, carping, "Why aren't you President? I swear, what is this country worth..."
Well, Barack seems like a nice guy, and we wish him well. Let's hope he defeats Hillary for the nomination - or else, that he has a really comfortable couch.
